Book of Psalms
How great it is to praise the Lord! Hallelujah!
We praise the Lord not because we have to, not because we feel like it, but because He is worthy to be praised, for He is our creator, our saviour, our lover and He's the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
I've just started my quest to reading the bible recently. As I'd received a study bible as one of my birthday presents, I was so excited because all this while I was hoping to own one but there's a long delay due to not enough bugget and my sick health. But nevertheless, delay is not denial! I'm now the owner of the Spirit-filled Bible for Students.
Before I start, I would like to share with you some truths of myself. The bible consists of many books and is divided into two parts - The Old Testament and the New Testament. Of the two, I prefer the Old Testament. Well, I don't mean that I don't like the New Testament, don't ever get me wrongly accused for that. Both the Old and the New are good. The reason why I prefer the Old Testament is because of one favourite book of mine, which was written and compiled with it. And that favourite book of mine was mainly written by my favourite Biblical Hero, David. Guessed it? Yes, the Book of Psalms.
Ephesians 5:19 - ".. speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord..."
James 5:13 - "Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms."
1Corinthians 14:26 - "How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification."
2Samuel 23:1 - "Now these are the last words of David. Thus says David the son of Jesse; Thussays the man raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel..."
The word "Psalm" appeared three times in the New Testament, and once in the Old Testament. What does "Psalm" means?
Psalm literally means praise. And when people are known to be singing psalms, they are actually singing praises to the Lord. The Book of Psalms is a collection of ancient Hebrew songs and poetry used for congregational worship. Most of the Psalms were written by David. Some were written by Moses, Araph, Heman, the sons of Korah, Solomon, Ethan and Jeduthun.
Why do I love reading the Psalms? Let's talk about its Primary Purpose. This book is what I call the book of expression - From anguish, fear and pain, to joy, faith and victory. It is a book filled immensely with human emotions, which God so richly blessed us with. The ability to feel and the freedom to express oneself made this Book the greatest living praises of all generations.
The Book of Psalms reveals how we are given the freedom to tell God how we feel. And often times, we go through many tribulations, persecutions and dark valleys that will veil our eyes from seeing the light at end of the tunnel. Nevertheless, God has richly blessed us the ability to express ourselves and to feel with our heart, soul and spirit. It is always good to come before God to tell Him our deepest concerns and yearnings, as well as confusions and hurts. God will never stop us from doing that and we don't have to fear His chastisement, because of the freedom He has given us - The freedom to express.
Praise the Lord! The bible says that when we bring ourselves and our feelings to God, the focus will begin to shift from our circumstances to the worship of our Lord. Emotions and problems will come and go, but our Lord remains the same.
When we praise, anxiety is relieved and forgiveness is released. God will turn our mourning into dancing. With this joy, the singing and the shouting and the praising will get louder and louder. Therefore, shout to the Lord! Hallelujah!!
Praise the Lord! For He is worthy to be praised.
Praise the Lord! For He lives among and in us.
Praise the Lord! Praise His name!
Amen.
