Psalm 3

Psalm 3:1-8
"Lord, how they have increased who trouble me!
Many are they who rise up against me.
Many are they who say of me,
'There is no help for him in God.'
But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
I cried to the Lord with my voice,
And He heard me from His holy hill.
I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me all around.
Arise, O Lord;
Save me, O my God!
For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone;
You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.
Salvation belongs to the Lord.
Your blessing is upon Your people."

This is the Psalm of David. It was during this time, when David was escaping from his treacherous son, Absalom. By reading 2Samuel 15, it gives a whole account of Absalom's conspiracy against his father, King David - How Absalom actually stole the hearts of the people of Israel from David and went after him. With this, David and his servants fled Jerusalem.

When David wrote this Psalm, he knows that God will rescue His people and him in times of trouble when their enemies are going against them. Not only will He rescue, He also protects.

Ephesian 6:16 - "... above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."

This phrase encourages us believers that whenever we face any difficulties or troublesome situations to take up the shield of faith to overcome them. When David was writing this Psalm, he was filled with despair, desperation and fear. Despite all these, David had the faith in God. That faith he had was evidently found if you read between the lines -

Psalm 3:3 - But You, O Lord, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head;

Lay-man tongue - Lord, You are my shield, my protection in these troubled times. Despite all these, You are the One I trust and worship; the One I look upon.

--------------------------------------------------

Psalm 3:4 - I cried to the Lord with my voice,
And He heard me from His holy hill;

Lay-man tongue - Lord! Hear me. Hear my desperation! No matter what will happen, I know that You are still here for me and with me.

--------------------------------------------------

Psalm 3:6 - I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me all around.

Lay-man tongue - I will not be afraid Lord, for You are with me.

--------------------------------------------------

Psalm 3:7 - ... For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone;
You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.

Lay-man tongue - For I know you have overcome the world, nothing is greater than You. Greater is He who lives in me than He who is in the world!

--------------------------------------------------

Psalm 3:8 - Salvation belongs to the Lord.
Your blessing is upon Your people.

Lay-man tongue - Those who call upon You as their Lord and believe in You shall be saved. Your blessings shall be on them. And they will fear nothing for You are with them.

Many a times, our troubles are more spiritual than physical, because since we serve an almighty God in His spiritual realm, our enemies are predictably Satan and his evil minions. Satan knows that since he can't win us in most ways, he starts to mess around with our believe system. In short, he messes around with our minds. Knowing that by twisting our thoughts, he could create doubts and with doubts, it will eventually turn into fear, this manipulating scheme has become a common spiritual killer among the believers. Faith pleases God; fear distants one from God. Thus, dealing with spiritual troubles is very common and expectable.

Even if our enemies are physical, they may not be. Because they may be energised by the powers of darkness. Nevertheless, God is our shield of defence, our main source of protection against these spiritual enemies.

In conclusion, it is important to ask God daily for protection wherever you go. Not only protection, but other important sources as well for spiritual warfare - a warfare that all believers have to deal with their whole lives.

Ephesians 6 gives a detailed description about the Armour of God which we believers have to put on when dealing with the enemies.

1. Gird your waist with truth - Your waist is where your spirit is. Thus, a spirit must contain the truth (God's Word).

2. Put on the breastplate of righteousness - Live with Godly righteousness. The purpose of a breastplate is to protect the main part of a soldier's body from being attacked. The main part consists of his heart, lungs, stomach and other organs. Therefore, if one doesn't live with this righteous attitude, it is like going to war without your main armour, the breastplate. This way, one will be killed shortly.

3. Shod your feet with with the preparation of the gospel of peace - Be ready. Be very ready to preach the good news whenever you need to.

4. Take up the Shield of Faith - We need it when we ought to be on the defensive. If the enemy is too strong in his strike of his sword, the shield of faith will help defend us and save us from the damage. In war, a soldier can hardly ever survive fully without his shield. Same goes for faith in God. Without it, one's life will be in ruins. However, Satan and his minions don't use swords, they're cowardly enough to use flaming arrows.

5. Put on the Helmet of Salvation - You can't go to war without a helmet either. Just be assured that Salvation belongs to the Lord. And in Him, there is salvation.

6. Take up the Sword of the Spirit - This is the Word of God. This is the bible. And the bible is the only weapon that all believers use against the power of darkness. Couple it with persistent praying and reading of the word, it actually sharpens this sword.

Finally, Paul says, "Stay alert!"

--------------------------------------------------

The faith that King David had saved his life and his people. Soon after, we hear about Absalom's death and David's safe return to Jerusalem.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
