Churchwide Bible Study (Part I)

Read: Matthew 7:13-14

Narrow Way - Having a clear mind of how to walk in righteouness. Having a spirit of discernment.

Left |---------------| |---------------| Right

Middle (Narrow Way): Righteousness

Right: Legalism

Left: Antinomianism

Read: Isaiah 29:13, Amos 5:21-24

3 Types of Legalism: -

1. Divorcing the LETTER of the law from the SPIRIT of the law.

2. ADDING legislation to the law of God & treats the addition as if it were DVINE law. (Matthew 23:4,15,23) - Focus on the more important things. Don't major on the minors.

3. Relying on PERFORMANCE to merit favour before God. (Galatians 2:16)

Legalism is the UNIVERSAL tendancy of Mankind.

Results from Legalism: It weakens the conscience. (1 Corinthians 8:9)
This can cause one to stumble easily.

- Obedience is not WORK. (Hebrews 11:8)
(True faith always leads to obedience)
- CONSERVATION is not legalism.
(Unless you start criticising others who doesn't do as you do, behave as you behave etc.)

Read: Matthew 24:12

3 Types of Antinomianism (Teaching to go against the law of God): -

1. Gnostic Spiritualism. (Gk. gnosis = knowledge)(Acts 5:1, 18:7, 25:14, 17:10, 1John 4:1) Main excuse for gnostic spiritual = "The Holy Spirit spoke to me..."

2. Libertinism.
(Liberty = Freedom)
(Libertine = Freedom without restriction)
Read up stories regarding Martin Luther and Johannes Agricola (1547-1540)
Result of Liternism: -
- Redemption becomes a licence to sin. (Romans 5:20-21, 6:1-2, 1Peter 2:15-16)
Licentiousness = Lawlessness
Legalism is not the main problem after all, it's lawlessness.

3. Situation Ethics.
Main code of belief = Law of Love (Doing what seems most loving) (Ephesians 5:1-3)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Law of God

1. The MORAL law or the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17)

Covenant of God -> Agreement between 2 people -> Oath
The Mosaic Law is not permenant. It was given by God at that time to tame the people.

2. The CIVIL law (Exodus 21-23 and other places in Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy)

3. The CEREMONIAL law (mostly in Leviticus)

Law in Hebrew is Tarah = 1st five books of the bible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Purpose of the Law

1. The Law acts as a MIRROR.
- It reveals the face of God.
- It shows how God is like.
- It reflects God's character.

2. The Law acts as a RESTRAINT. (Romans 13:1,4)
(However, law may also, on other hand, inflame us to be rebellious)

3. The Law acts as a REVEALER. (Galatians 3:24)

"If it hasn't been for the law, I would never have known my need for the gospel. I never would have seen the sweetness of the gospel, were I not exposed to the dreadful punishments of the law." - Martin Luther
